Staff: Meet the people who run the show

Irene Abrego

Irene Abrego
Irene Abrego has been on the UJW staff since 1987 while a student at San Antonio College. She covered police and general assignments and wrote editorials at the San Antonio Light, then worked at the business desk of The New York Times in Dallas. She began teaching in 1996 and along with Marianne Odom was honored with a Headliner Award for Education in 2004.

Dr. Fred Blevens

Dr. Fred Blevens
Fred Blevens, professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Florida International University, was city editor of the San Antonio Light when he worked with the first UJW in 1985. He worked at seven dailies in five states before completing a Ph.D. at the University of Missouri at Columbia. He also has taught at Texas State and Texas A&M universities. In 2001, he was a national Freedom Forum Teacher of the Year.

Tricia Buchhorn

Tricia Buchhorn
Tricia Buchhorn, photo adviser at San Antonio College, will be completing a master’s degree in fine arts this fall at the Academy of Art in San Francisco. She has worked for The Dallas Morning News and Associated Press and taught digital photography at the Southwest School of Art and Craft and San Antonio College. She’s been on staff since 1988.


Vincent Davis

Vincent Davis
Vincent Davis is on the Community in Focus team for the San Antonio Express-News where he has worked since 1998. The Texas State University graduate earned a bachelor’s degree in communication design. He earned his associate’s degree in print graphics from San Antonio College where he got his start in newspapers as an illustrator for The Ranger.

Cynthia Esparza

Cynthia Esparza
Cynthia Esparza, a photographer at the San Angelo Standard-Times, graduated from Texas State University-San Marcos after attending San Antonio College. The Chips Quinn Scholar most recently has garned national attention through her coverage of the raid of the FLDS compound in Eldorado.

Kym Fox

Kym Fox
Kym Fox, a mass communications instructor at Texas State University-San Marcos, served as deputy metro editor and county courthouse reporter for the San Antonio Express-News for 18 years. In 24 years as a journalist, she interviewed the Queen of England and Michael Jackson — but not at the same time. She is a graduate of the Cronkite School of Journalism at Arizona State University.


Juan Garcia

Juan Garcia
Juan Garcia, a staff photographer for The Dallas Morning News, has brought unsurpassed enthusiasm to the UJW since 1996. He has been on staff at The Dallas Morning News since 1981, covering everything from Central American wars and the 1985 Mexico City earthquake to professional sports.

Dr. Edmund Lo

Dr. Edmund Lo
Edmund Lo, a native of Hong Kong, joined the faculty in fall 2005. Last week, he successfully defended his doctoral dissertation on photo illustration at Ohio University. He teaches photojournalism, digital photography and design as well as advises The Ranger photo staff. He worked as a photojournalist for nine years in Hong Kong after earning a master’s from the University of Missouri at Columbia.

Adrian Zamarron

Adrian Zamarron
Adrian Zamarron has worked at the Austin American-Statesman since 1992 as a page designer and copy editor. He worked at the San Antonio Express-News while attending San Antonio College and working on The Ranger. He won a Dow Jones scholarship for his 1989 workshop story on teen stereotypes, and the next year, joined the staff. The UT-Austin graduate is our production manager.


Claire Andres

Claire Andres
Claire Andres, working on a doctorate in linguistics at the University of Georgia, is in her sixth summer as chief resident assistant for the workshop. The former Ranger editor teaches English part-time at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Paul Zoeller

Paul Zoeller
Paul Zoeller joined the UJW staff in 1996 while a San Antonio College student. He graduated from the University of Texas at Arlington with a degree in photojournalism. After several years on staff as a photographer at the Odessa American, he moved to College Station where he freelanced for the local paper and the Associated Press. This summer he moves his family to Charleston, S.C.


Resident Assistants

Assistants include former Ranger editor Joyce Flores and San Antonio College students Sonya Harvey, Jason B. Hogan, Vanessa Sanchez and Laura Garcia. Charles Cima serves as Web administrator.
