The Urban Journalism Workshop at San Antonio College

The Program

Overview

During the workshop students start their day in classes learning the skills required of reporters and photographers. Afternoons are spent in lab working on stories one-on-one with writing coaches or going out on interviews.

One day of the workshop is devoted to showing students the life of a professional journalist. Students spend a day shadowing journalists from the Express-News and spend lunch with editors of the paper.

In the newsroom of The Ranger at San Antonio College, learn the routines and procedures of a professional newsroom.

Their dinners are spent networking with professional journalism organizations including the San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists, the San Antonio Chapter of Professional Journalists, the San Antonio Association of Black Journalists and the Friends of Journalism at San Antonio College.

During the evenings, students have a chance to unwind while playing board games, bowling and hanging out at the dorms.

Chow

Being a residential program, the Urban Journalism Workshop at San Antonio College provides nutritious breakfasts in the dorm, box lunches at the college and dinners out in area restaurants.

Many of the dinners are sponsored by local professional organizations, giving their members a chance for informal discussion with the student participants.

The organizations include the Society of Professional Journalists, San Antonio pro and San Antonio College student chapters; San Antonio Association of Black Journalists, San Antonio Association of Hispanic Journalists and Friends of Journalism at San Antonio College.

Among our faithful restaurant sponsors are Subway on North Main Avenue, EZ’s Brick Oven Grille on North New Braunfels and Chipotle Grill on Broadway.

We try to provide food that will please the widest possible tastes, but can also accommodate special needs, such as vegetarian diets.

If you have any food allergies, please make sure we know about it.

Dates

  • Always use Arabic numbers without “nd”, “th”, “st”, “rd”.
  • Always capitalize months.
  • When a month is used with a specific date, abbreviate Jan., Feb., Aug., Sept., Oct., Nov. and Dec. Spell out March, April, May, June and July. For example, “The event ran Feb. 27 – March 5.”
  • When writing a month and year without a date, don’t separate the year and month with commas. For example, “School begins August 2010.”
  • But if a phrase includes day, month and year, then put commas around the year. For example, “The trouble began on Jan. 1, 2010.”
