Since its beginning in 1985, the Urban Journalism Workshop at San Antonio College has welcomed more than 300 high school students into a two-week journalism boot camp.

Traditional media channels such as radio, television, newspapers and magazines are finding new homes online with an ever-growing need for trained journalists who are at home in the world of the Web.

Why should my kid study journalism?

Newspapers may change how they do business and the format in which news is carried, but so will radio and television. Since the advent of the Internet, every news organization has had to maintain on online presence.

Each generation arrives with new technology that is integrated into news gathering. The media may change, but our reliance on the information newspaper reporters collect is vital to our roles as civic-minded citizens in a free society.

The Urban Journalism Workshop at San Antonio College is dedicated to:

• Encouraging young people of diverse backgrounds to enter careers in the newspaper industry.
• Introducing bright, young people to the crafts of news gathering, reporting and photography.
• Instilling in students a standard of excellence.
• Helping students develop critical thinking skills.
• Upholding professional codes of ethics.
• Developing professionalism in students.
• Creating high school press leaders.
• Demonstrating team building.
• Creating networks of professional contacts for students.
• Mentoring those drawn to the field of newspaper.

We recognize that every student selected for participation will not become a journalist. Yet we know we better equip them as communicators, media consumers and student leaders.

Finally, we believe that mastery of basic communication skills will result in admirable performance in any field.
